About Us
The Ensemble Camerata Berolinensis specializes in music from the late 17th and 18th century on period instruments. This not only means the use of historical instruments, the Camerata also tries to satisfy the scholarly demands of true historical performance practice.

Camerata Berolinensis regularly plays in Early Music festivals and series in Germany amd abroad and has appeared at the Festival Alte Musik live in Berlin, and at the Early Music series at Claydon House in Britain. The Musikmanufaktur Berlin label has released two CDs, Stamitz/Gluck: Sinfonie a tre and J. Haydn: Divertimenti für Streichtrio Vol. I, the second volume of Haydn String trios is to be released shortly.

The group's founder and director, Johannes Gebauer, born in Berlin, studied music at King’s College, Cambridge (UK) and violin with Simon Standage. From 1994-5 he was the youngest member of the Academy of Ancient Music, Collegium Musicum 90 and the Steinitz Bach Players. In 1995 he took up graduate studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where he concentrated on chamber music studies with cellist Christophe Coin, while at the same time participating in several projects as concert master. He also took master classes with Stanley Ritchie and Micaela Comberti.

Now again based in Berlin, Johannes Gebauer is a principal member of the Aradia Ensemble, Toronto, and a member of the Bach Ensemble, New York (director: Joshua Rifkin), the Cappella Coloniensis (the oldest and largest period instrument orchestra in Germany), the Johann Christian Bach Akademie (Cologne) and the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien. He is concert master of the Ensemble Continuum (Karlsruhe) and director of Virtulettanti (Berlin). As a chamber musician Johannes Gebauer has partnered with Simon Standage, José Vasquez and Mary Verney. He performs regularly as concert soloist, concert master and chamber musician in Germany and abroad and has participated in many CD and radio recordings.
In June 2003 he performed Bach's second Partita for solo violin in the Berlin Early Music Festvial Alte Musik live; the concert was broadcast live on public radio RBB/ Radio Kultur.

Johannes Gebauer also works as a musicologist for Christopher Hogwood and participated in several publications and editions. An essay on the history of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin has been published in the Swiss Early Music magazin Intrada.
